Do you remember the story about Abram? Do you recall that he refused to take kickbacks from the king even though it would have made him richer? In fact Abram was a giver. He was in God’s favor, but still he expresses fear of his future. He was concerned that even though he had it all materially, he was desperate for children to share it with. I’m not a theologian, but to me, the lack of children was a symptom of a deeper spiritual issue. It is only God who can create the life of a child and with Abram’s desperate need came his total reliance on God. With Abram’s acknowledgement came his belief and consuming faith in the power of the almighty God to meet his needs and to take care of him always. What are your needs? Where are you looking for fulfillment? What rewards do you seek? I love verse 6 of the scripture today. It’s a pretty basic statement with eternal implications. Believe God and be Set-Right.
Genesis 15:1-6
After all these things, this word of God came to Abram in a vision: “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I’m your shield. Your reward will be grand!” Abram said, “God, Master, what use are your gifts as long as I’m childless and Eliezer of Damascus is going to inherit everything?” Abram continued, “See, you’ve given me no children, and now a mere house servant is going to get it all.” Then God’s Message came: “Don’t worry, he won’t be your heir; a son from your body will be your heir.” Then he took him outside and said, “Look at the sky. Count the stars. Can you do it? Count your descendants! You’re going to have a big family, Abram!” And he believed! Believed God! God declared him “Set-Right-with-God.”
